Rewe Group Fegro/Selgros to tailor stores to regional needs

15 May 2009

Rewe Group's wholesale division Fegro/Selgros is thinking about better tailoring its 43 German cash & carry stores to customers’ needs on a regional basis. Lebensmittel Zeitung has revealed that Selgros is planning to implement elements of its Swiss Prodega and Growa cash & carries, as reportedly suggested by Hansueli Loosli, CEO of Swiss Coop, Selgros' joint venture partner in Transgourmet Holding. Selgros has already cut 200 jobs in Germany over the past months. As first reported by Planet Retail in March, sales in its German stores fell by 4% during 2008. Including its operations in Romania, Poland and Russia, net sales grew by 1.7% to EUR3.05 billion (USD4.46 billion) during 2008. The total number of stores reached 74, including its first outlet in Russia, which opened last December in Kotelniki.
