Aldi marks another all-time low for butter in Germany

2 Febuary 2009

Following a drop in commodity prices, Aldi has embarked on the third round of permanent price reductions this year in Germany. Around 30 articles ranging from cereals to wines will be reduced. The price cuts include butter, which now sells at another all-time low of EUR0.65 (USD0.87) per 250g. Earlier reductions included breads, pasta, chocolate and dairy products. Rewe Group's discount chain Penny has countered the cuts this morning with the move being announced on Saturday, while other discount operators are to follow within a few days. Aldi's move can also be seen as a response to earlier markdowns from Schwarz Group's Lidl and Edeka's discounter Netto, following the recent acquisition of Plus from Tengelmann. Today's price cuts for household cleaners and detergents include adjustments to prices found at dm drogerie markt and AS Watson's Rossmann drugstores.
